Why use AI?
Here’s a story about the ups and downs of AI:
Once upon a time, a comedian decided to ask AI to write a script for his comedy show. The results of the AI’s work seemed fantastic — well-written and funny. But when the comedian performed the script on stage, it fell flat. Not even a giggle from the crowd.
So why didn’t anyone laugh?
The reason it failed is because it was generic, standardised, simply a collection of things people had heard and seen before. There was nothing really novel or attention-grabbing. There was no real flair, and no creative flourish.
As this story shows, AI is not a replacement for proven human experience and creativity, but it IS an astonishingly sophisticated and incredibly useful tool. At least in the right hands! I have over 20 years of experience in translating content of all kinds from German into English, and AI is now helping me become even better at what I do.
AI is fundamentally transforming the translation industry. But the tale of the comedian shows us that translating texts with AI and then using inexperienced, low-paid translators to hurriedly check the results is NOT the answer. We need to harness AI, but carefully.

That’s the advantage I have over inexperienced AI users.
